REMARKS FROM THE BaKTI BOARD OF TRUSTEES

After the hard work, preparation and lengthy negotiations by our management team in Makassar, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, international development partner agencies and stakeholders associated with BaKTI, I hereby announce the establishment of the BaKTI Foundation to the public. All the legal procedures and all the necessary documents have been completed therefore we have full confidence in declaring that the BaKTI Foundation is an independent institution located in Makassar.

In the recent periods of our existence as BaKTI with our five years of experience, much has been achieved such as the BaKTINews with its initial publication in 2005 with only 8 pages and being distributed to only 200 recipients and currently, BaKTINews is published monthly with 32 pages and reaches 3000 recipients of the print version and 1000 recipients of the electronic version.

In the last 5 years, the BaKTI Information Services has answered more than 1000 inquiries for information on various KTI development programs and the stakeholders involved. BaKTI has also facilitates hundreds of collaborations between organizations and individuals from the Government, international development partners, the private sector, universities and other community-based organizations.

As the secretariat for the Eastern Indonesian Regional Forum, BaKTI has supported the convening of four annual meetings, four meetings of the Heads of the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) Forum, two the Eastern Indonesia Region Researchers’ Network (JiKTI) meetings and has also cooperated with Bappenas in the process of the 2010-2014 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) Synchronization with its regional dimension in the KTI.

The BaKTI public development data access and library facility began operating in 2005 with less than 100 visitors each month and currently there are more than 1200 visits to BaKTI each month. There have been more than 500 meetings, trainings and visits held by BaKTI in the past 5 years.

In addition to the BaKTI website, (www.bakti.or.id), BaKTI has also developed an online knowledge forum called batukarinfo.com. BaKTI also has a Facebook profile and an active mailing list.

We wish to acknowledge those who have endeavored and shown their commitment to realize a vision to build a better future for our region. All this allows us as the Trustees to concentrate on our priorities for the coming five years which is the first cycle of this Foundation. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees provides its full support and cooperation through a consolidated management and organization in order to be able to work in a smart and effective manner. Despite maintaining the "modus operandi" of the organization, all parties have committed themselves to being involved in a transformational process for an effective movement for the Eastern Indonesia Region. In this context, we are prepared to cooperate responsibly with our partners in the Eastern Indonesia Region, national and international partners.

We express our gratitude to the Local Governments of the Eastern Indonesia Region, the Central Government especially the Ministry of Home Affairs and BAPPENAS, AusAID, CIDA and the World Bank who have played a role in the five years of BaKTI’s existence. We hope this cooperation can be enhanced in the future.

Last but not least, we express our highest appreciation to the staff of BaKTI, especially to Caroline Tupamahu, the BaKTI Executive Director who has taken BaKTI beyond its transitional period towards the establishment of the BaKTI Foundation during her leadership.
